Book Review: Lessons from Madame Chic

Lessons from Madame Chic: 20 Stylish Secrets I Learned While Living in Paris by Jennifer L Scott is a fantastic gem of a book that I originally bought on kindle, but loved so much, I bought a hardback copy to add to my (growing) collection of French Chic books. I've been a follower of Jennifer's blog The Daily Connoisseur for a while (highly, highly recommended BTW), and it's always a concern when a blogger gets a book deal that the manuscript will simply be a rehash of their blog content, especially when she did an amazing series on there called Top 20 Things I Learned in Paris! I was thrilled to discover that this was not the case as all. While they both cover familiar ground (and familiar territory to other French style books), and her 20 chapters are based on her original blog posts, the twenty stylish secrets in this book build on the information she shares on her blog and take them to another level. This is not a serious tome - it is a light and refreshing quick read, and perfect for Chic Mummies, since it is easy to read a chapter at a time as your day allows. I promise, though, if you are anything like me, you will devour the book in one sitting!

Divided into three sections, Diet and Exercise, Style and Beauty, and How to Live Well, Jennifer covers all areas of your life, and how you can conduct each of them in a more stylish and beautiful way. She shows you how to elevate your daily life, from just life, to an art form. Using the role model families she stayed with while living in Paris, Jennifer recounts how she went from young innocent to stylish sophisticated, and how she carries on living this way now she is back in the US with her own family. With the mixture of personal anecdotes and the 20 lessons themselves, this book is never boring, and always inspiring.

Is this ground breaking stuff? No, of course not, and a lot is common sense, but reading Lessons from Madame Chic reminds me to live my daily life in a way that is a little bit more French, and a little bit more chic.

You can purchase the hard cover at most bookstores and at Amazon, or as an ebook for the Kindle.
